Community foundations are set up with a hyper-local focus. Our initiatives, grants, and programming support nonprofits in the Harrisonburg and Rockingham County area.

Our donors, of course, can support nonprofits wherever they desire.

If you don’t operate in this area and you’re looking for aid or grants, there’s probably a community foundation serving your geographic locale. Our colleagues to the north are the Shenandoah Community Foundation. To the south is the Community Foundation of the Central Blue Ridge and the Charlottesville Area Community Foundation.

Please call us. We understand that some organizations provide multi-county services. Helpful information for our discussion would be the approximate number of residents you serve as well as the amount of funding used in Harrisonburg and Rockingham County.

We do not host a nonprofit directory at this time. However, our Great Community Give website has nearly 150 organizations listed, with a searchable filter. Another great resource is our Giving Back Guide, which features nearly 80 organizations.

You’ve seen a need and are inspired and passionate enough to want to make a difference! Starting a nonprofit is a big investment of time and energy. Here’s a few tips as you consider your path forward:

  • Look around for other local organizations serving similar needs. Many organizations have overlapping missions.
  • Our monthly networking event, Coffee and Conversation, is a great first stop. We host this event the second Tuesday of each month from 9-11 a.m. at our office, 317 South Main Street, Harrisonburg. TCFHR staff are familiar with the local NPO landscape. We can listen to your idea, hear where you are in your journey, and connect you with resources, including other nonprofit leaders in the area who might be helpful. Register for the next C&C.
  • Experience working with a nonprofit as a volunteer, board member, or paid staff will help you prepare. Consider volunteering with an organization before starting your own. What ways you might make a difference and learn more about both the field you’re interested in and how nonprofits work? Could you volunteer in a specific way using your skills? Would board service be an option?
  • Research the steps of starting a nonprofit organization. Each state has different rules and regulations (and paperwork!). From Candid: How do I start a nonprofit organization?  From Council of Nonprofits: Starting and Running a Nonprofit
  • Your organization will be governed by a board of interested, invested, and skilled community members. Have you thought about who you might need to serve on your board and how those relationships will impact and influence your leadership? The nonprofit organization BoardSource provides a wealth of resources.
