Work with The Community Foundation of Harrisonburg & Rockingham County for nonprofit grants.
There are two grant cycles per year to connect local nonprofit organizations with funding. Deadlines are at the beginning of March and September each year. Applications are open roughly four to six weeks before each deadline. See exact details on our application. Agencies may apply once per calendar year.
To seek nonprofit funding, agencies must be tax-exempt public charities with Section 501(c)(3) status from the IRS code. Organizations must be physically located in Harrisonburg or Rockingham County, and the project or program to be funded must serve the local area. Please contact us if you have questions regarding eligibility before beginning an application.
Religious organizations are welcome to apply if the project significantly aids the community. Nonprofit grants are made without regard to factors of gender, race, religion, national origin, or sexual orientation.
Funding comes from multiple sources benefitting many nonprofit organizations.
The Community Foundation of Harrisonburg & Rockingham County shares nonprofit grant requests with our donors, local family and private foundations, other local philanthropists, local giving circles and our own Grants & Scholarship Committee. Current project requests from nonprofit organizations are updated on our website and highlighted at all Community Foundation events.
In 2018, The Community Foundation will partner with the Daily News-Record to publish a booklet for each cycle of the Community Needs projects. This booklet will feature a summary of your project and will include your nonprofit’s contact information, the project description, basic financial information from your organization’s 990, and other needs of your organization. The fall publication of Giving Back will be included in the November 28th edition of the DN-R with a distribution of 15,000 readers.
Funding can range from $250 to $10,000. Donations are at the discretion of individual donors, civic clubs and grants committees. Funds are not distributed on any certain timeline. Donors may contribute from their funds at The Community Foundation of Harrisonburg & Rockingham County. Donors may send funding directly to a nonprofit agency. In that instance, the TCFHR may not know about the funding even though it resulted from the Community Needs process.
