Work with The Community Foundation of Harrisonburg & Rockingham County for nonprofit grants.
There are two grant cycles per year to connect local nonprofit organizations with funding. Deadlines are at the beginning of March and September each year. Applications are open roughly six to eight weeks before each deadline. See exact details on our application. Agencies may apply once per calendar year.
To seek nonprofit funding, agencies must be tax-exempt public charities with Section 501(c)(3) status from the IRS code. Organizations must be physically located in Harrisonburg or Rockingham County, and the project or program to be funded must serve the local area. Nonprofit organizations outside the area that serve a substantial part of our community may apply with permission from The Community Foundation. Please contact us to determine eligibility before applying.
Religious organizations are welcome to apply if the project significantly aids the community. Nonprofit grants are made without regard to factors of gender, race, religion, national origin, or sexual orientation.
Funding comes from multiple sources benefitting many nonprofit organizations.
The Community Foundation of Harrisonburg & Rockingham County shares nonprofit grant requests with our donors, local family and private foundations, other local philanthropists, our IMPACT Harrisonburg giving circle and our own Community Endowment Fund grants committee. Current project requests from nonprofit organizations are updated on our website and highlighted at all Community Foundation events.
Funding typically ranges from $250 to $10,000 and occasionally higher. Donations are at the discretion of individual donors, civic clubs and grants committees. Funds are not distributed on any certain timeline. Donors may contribute from their funds at The Community Foundation of Harrisonburg & Rockingham County. Donors may send funding directly to a nonprofit agency. In that instance, the TCFHR may not know about the funding even though it resulted from the Community Needs process.
